Safety & Rules
VAN BUREN POINT
Other guidelines for our neighborhood can be found in the Van Buren Point Information Guide.
Quiet Hours:   11 pm to 8 am
Playgrounds:   Open dawn to dusk
Beach: Closed at midnight
Speed Limit:    15 mph
CANDLES & OPEN FLAMES
We do not allow candles or open flames of any kind in our home- you can see why when you look around at all the wood!

VBP does not allow fires when windy, or any unattended fires. Please let fires burn down, and douse with water before leaving the fire pit for the night. Also, please do not cover any beach fires with sand - they can still be burning hot the next day!
PETS
We currently have two pets; Boo, an older black cat, and Lia, a grey cat. They will most likely be very shy, but occasionally one of them decides to visit a guest and demand attention. If this bothers you, please feel free to firmly order them to go, get down, etc. If you do not feel comfortable at any time, please call one of us and we will remove them.

We do our best to keep our home free of pet hair, but if you are allergic, please be aware that they are allowed to enter the guest room when we are not hosting. To guarantee that they do not enter your room, it would be a good idea to keep the door closed. If Boo or Lia do scoot in, again, please just put them out or call us and we will get them out for you.

We do not allow guests to bring pets.
SMOKING POLICY
Ours in a non-smoking home, but guests may smoke outside.
FIRST AID
There is a first aid kit in the guest room and extra supplies in the downstairs bathroom if needed.
LOCATION OF FIRE EXTINGUISHER
There are two fire extinguishers in our cottage; one to the left of the stove on the counter, and one across from the guest bathroom in the upstairs hallway.
SMOKE & CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS
There are two combo smoke/carbon monoxide detectors in our home: one in the kitchen above the breakfast bar, and one in the guest bedroom. There is also a carbon monoxide detector by the stairs and an additional smoke detector there as well. They will start giving off single periodic bleeps when the battery is running low- if that happens, please just let us know and we will change the battery.
SUN & BUGS
We have sunscreen if you find yourself without it, and aloe vera lotion in case of sunburn. We also have several kinds of bug spray, including a natural product. One of us can get them for you, but if you are on your own, these can all be found in the small basket to the left on the top shelf in the downstairs bathroom.
WATER SHOES
We recommend guests use water shoes, or sandals (like Tevas) of some sort. You will notice that some of our residents do and some do not, but we usually do whenever the water is not completely clear and calm. The lake bed alternates between sand and shale, which can get very slippery and/or bumpy- an unexpected dunking might be fine, but a stubbed toe is no fun!
WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF A POWER OUTAGE
We almost never any issues with our power, the rare case normally being a winter ice storm, but if we do have a power outage, please use the flashlight in the basket in your room to help you get around. We will keep you informed, and as soon as our power company gives us an estimate of power restoration, we will pass that on to you.
